Homemade vanilla extract is a lot cheaper by the ounce and you made it yourself! You can cook it anywhere from 4-8 hours, the color is the main thing that will change. The picture was cooked for 6 hours. Do 1 or 2 bean pods per ounce, depending on taste.

  1. Slice the bean pods lengthwise.
  2. Combine bean pods and vodka in mason jar. Secure watertight lid. Place mason jar in water bath. If there is an air pocket in the mason jar then you might have to place a weight on the top.

Finishing Steps

  1. Remove from water bath when timer is complete. Let extract come to room temperature. Transfer extract to dark glass container (brown or olive colored) and place bean pods in also. Enjoy!
